For years I have hated tax season. Just the thought of it filled me with dread and foreboding. A friend referred me to Hansley Cook, promising me that he was quick and that he had always gotten what was owed to him. I was a bit apprehensive about having my taxes done by someone that was out of town and that I would not meet face to face. But I need not have worried. I spoke to him on the phone so that he could get some background, and then I promised to send him my previous year’s tax documents as well as the ones that I would need to have this year’s taxes done. I did everything electronically and he took care of everything else. He was professional and personable. But the most impressive thing was the level of personal attention I got. A few days after our initial phone conversation, I hadn’t sent my documents yet because I was out of town, and he sent me a gentle reminder so I wouldn’t forget. After he completed the paperwork and sent it to me for review, I had tons of questions over a period of days and he answered every one of them patiently and promptly, no matter how rudimentary it was. Even for questions that I’m sure he gets asked often, I got a newly generated answer when I’m sure he could have cut and pasted a pre-printed reply. In all, despite the fact that I owe money (which I do every year, and it was no surprise), it was still the most painless tax preparation I’ve ever endured.
