I had used Robert Golej to do my taxes for the past two years without incident, but all that changed earlier this year. Rob had been recommended to me by a mutual friend and I've seen him around different social gatherings so when he told me he was opening his own firm I happily followed him. When he contacted me in February to see if my wife and I wanted him to do our taxes again, and we willing agreed. However, once I sent him our tax information things started to get weird... Shortly after emailing him our W2s, I received a strange call from Rob. He told me that he was going to be traveling out of state and was wondering if I could make out the check for his services to his wife since she wasn't a signer on his business account and she was handling his business finances while he was gone. I thought it was an odd request and not very professional, but being that we had mutual friends, I gave him the benefit of the doubt knowing that it's tough starting your own business. The following day after the check had been mailed out, Rob sent me a text message telling me he was in the area and that if I hadn't already mailed out the check that we could leave it for him and he would pick it up. That's when I knew my initial suspicions were correct and something was up. First of all if you were traveling out of state what are you doing in my area on business. Second, I live in Laurence Harbor which is a good half hour from Morganville where he claimed to be on business. In retrospect this should have been a big red flag, but again I thought I knew Rob so I brushed it off as a starving business owner in his first year. It was about a week without hearing from Rob before I tried contacting him... I assumed it was tax season and he had been traveling so I didn't want to be a pain. No response and my check was already cashed. Another few days went by and I left another message followed by an email, and then a text message… Still no response. I finally, reached out our mutual friend to see if something happened to Rob (death in the family, illness, whatever)… He said he would reach out Rob and let him know I was waiting to hear from him. The next day I finally got a response, a text message saying, “Your taxes are almost done.” That was the last I heard of Rob. I gave him two more days to file my taxes and after several unreturned phone calls, emails and text messages I finally told Rob not to file my taxes and issue me a refund. It has now been a month and half… I had to go to HR Block to file my taxes and still no refund. The worst part is, is that my taxes should be the easiest taxes in the world to file… No deductions, no house, no business, just 2 W2s and student loan interest to deduct. Long story short this man should NOT be trusted!!!
